Asian Handicap: How the Quarter-Goal Lines Work
Asian Handicap removes the draw and can split your stake across two outcomes. The quarter lines are where most confusion starts.
Asian Handicap applies a goal handicap to one team and eliminates the draw, turning soccer into a two-way market. Whole and half-goal lines behave much as handicaps do in other sports. The quarter lines are what make the format distinctive.
Half-goal and whole-goal lines
At minus half a goal, a team simply has to win. At minus one goal, a one-goal win refunds the stake and a two-goal win pays. Whole-goal lines therefore carry a push, which is why they are priced differently from half-goal lines.
The quarter lines
A line such as minus a quarter splits your stake evenly between the two nearest lines, in that case level and minus half. If the match ends in a draw, half the stake wins at level and half loses at minus half, so you recover half your money. Minus three quarters splits between minus half and minus one, and so on.
Why bettors use it
The appeal is precision. Instead of choosing between backing a team to win and accepting a draw refund, you can take a position between the two and pay a price that matches your actual confidence.
