NBA Totals and Pace: Reading the Over/Under
Modern NBA totals often sit above 220. Pace and three-point rate explain most of the movement between one game and the next.
An NBA total is the combined points expected from both teams. Totals have climbed over the past decade as teams shoot more threes and play faster, and figures above 220 are now routine rather than exceptional.
Pace is the first thing to check
Pace measures possessions per game. Two efficient offences playing slowly can produce a lower total than two mediocre offences playing quickly. Because both teams share the same number of possessions, pace affects the total more directly than shooting quality does.
Three-point variance
A team that takes a high volume of threes has a wider range of outcomes than one that works inside. That does not make the over more likely, but it does make the result less predictable, which is worth knowing before you stake heavily on a number.
Live betting the total
In-play markets react quickly to a hot start, sometimes more than the evidence justifies. A fast opening quarter does not guarantee a fast game. If you plan to bet totals live, decide your number before tip-off so the scoreboard does not do your thinking for you.
