How NBA Betting Lines Are Built
Basketball spreads behave differently from football. Scoring is frequent, so key numbers matter less and injury news matters far more.
An NBA spread works the same way as any other handicap: the favourite gives points, the underdog receives them. What changes is the shape of the distribution. Because baskets come in twos and threes and possessions are frequent, final margins spread out fairly smoothly rather than clustering on a few numbers.
Why there are no key numbers
In football a line sitting on 3 is worth defending. In basketball no single margin dominates, so moving a spread half a point is a much smaller adjustment. That makes shopping for the best number less dramatic than in the NFL, though it still adds up over a season.
Injuries and rest move these lines most
A single starter sitting can move an NBA spread by several points, and a star resting can move it by far more. Teams announce availability close to tip-off, so lines can shift sharply in the final hour. Anyone betting basketball needs to check the injury report immediately before placing a bet, not the night before.
Schedule matters
Back-to-back games, long road trips and travel across time zones all show up in performance. Books account for this, but the size of the adjustment is a genuine point of disagreement between sharp bettors and the market.
