Golf Betting Explained: Outrights, Each-Way and Matchups

Fields of well over a hundred players make outright golf odds long. Each-way terms and dead heat rules decide what you actually get paid.

Golf tournaments involve very large fields, so outright winner odds are long even for the best players in the world. A favourite may still be priced at odds that would be unthinkable in a two-way sport.

Each-way betting

An each-way bet is two bets: one on the outright win and one on a place finish. The terms specify how many places count and at what fraction of the odds. Those terms vary between sportsbooks for the same tournament, and comparing them matters as much as comparing the headline price.

Finishing position markets

Top-5, top-10 and top-20 markets let you back a player without needing an outright win. They are often the more sensible expression of an opinion in a deep field, since finishing well is far more likely than winning.

Dead heat rules

When several players tie for the final paying position, sportsbooks apply dead heat rules and reduce the payout proportionally. This is standard practice, not a penalty, but it surprises bettors who have not read the terms. In a sport where ties are common, it is worth understanding before you stake.
