MLB Home Run Props and Park Factors

Ballparks differ more than any other venue in major sport. That difference is measurable and it is priced into every home run market.

Home run props ask whether a specific batter will clear the fence. They are popular because the payout is long, and they are difficult because the event is rare and the variance is enormous.

Parks are not interchangeable

Baseball is unusual in that the field itself changes from venue to venue. Fence distances, wall heights, foul territory and altitude all vary. A ball that is a routine out in one park is a home run in another, and park factor figures attempt to quantify exactly that.

Wind is the daily variable

Park dimensions are constant, but conditions are not. A moderate breeze blowing out can matter more to a home run market than a hitter’s recent form, and it is one of the few pieces of information available to bettors well before first pitch.

Handedness and matchup

Platoon splits are real and sizeable. A left-handed pull hitter facing a right-handed pitcher in a park with a short right field is a genuinely different proposition from the same hitter in different circumstances, even though the prop looks identical on the screen.
