Why Baseball Betting Starts With the Moneyline
Baseball has no point spread in the usual sense. The moneyline is the main market, and the run line is fixed at a run and a half.
Most sports lead with a handicap. Baseball leads with the moneyline, a straight bet on which team wins. Because single runs decide so many games and margins are small, a variable spread would be a poor fit.
The run line
The run line is baseball’s handicap, and it is fixed rather than floating. The favourite is set at minus one and a half runs, the underdog at plus one and a half. Instead of moving the number, the sportsbook moves the price. Backing a strong favourite on the run line shortens the odds you receive but requires a two-run win.
Listed pitchers
This rule matters more than any other in baseball betting. If you place a bet with listed pitchers specified and either announced starter does not take the mound, the bet is void and your stake returned. If you do not specify, the bet stands regardless of who pitches. Always check which option your sportsbook applies by default.
Totals
Baseball totals usually sit between seven and ten runs. Park dimensions, wind direction and the quality of both bullpens all move the number. Wind blowing out at a small park is one of the few weather effects with a genuinely large influence on a total.
